Current challenges in the direction of the cure
Our contemporary world is marked by a series of trends whose impact on the practice of psychoanalysis warrants scrutiny: the spread of information on social media, the proliferation of hate speech, and renewed forms of segregation that coexist with a tendency toward homogenization in standardized practices. The logic of algorithms and the new tyrannies of knowledge introduce a new mode of ordering the symbolic field; what appears to be an individual choice often traps the subject in the cycle of consumption.
In the current situation, analysts are confronted with traversals from various sources—Google searches, conversations with AI, crash courses, promises of quick fixes—that seem to share a
common denominator: the imperative to take pleasure in consumption, which Lacan identified in the early 1970s as the ascent to the social zenith of the object a. Analytic discourse knows how to handle this object differently: it places it in the function of the cause of desire, making it possible to produce an analysand who may—or may not—become an analyst.
What challenges do we currently face in the analytic cures we seek to cause? Have these contemporary trends altered our practice and its crucial moments?
We invite you to revisit some of the questions Lacan posed in the 1950s—classics that still resonate today: Who analyzes today, and what formation is required for that? How is the analytic act sustained within the coordinates of our contemporary world? What is the actual state of transference to psychoanalysis in the face of the boundless supply of psychotherapies and wellness practices? How does an analyst respond to the crossroads of discontent in their time?
On the horizon of these questions lies another issue, perhaps even more unsettling: what does the future of psychoanalysis depend on?
